Luis Gonçalves tem doutoramento em Línguas Românicas – Português (2009), com especialização em Estudos da Comunicação e certificação em Estudos Culturais pela Universidade da Carolina do Norte em Chapel Hill, EUA, e Mestrado em Literatura Luso-Brasileira (2000) pela mesma universidade. É ainda Licenciado em Ciências da Comunicação (1995) pela Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Portugal. Ensina no Departamento de Espanhol & Português da Princeton University (2010-presente), é diretor da Middlebury Portuguese School (2022-presente) e sua pesquisa foca nas Culturas e Civilizações Lusófonas e nas suas dinâmicas transatlânticas. Outros focos de pesquisa importantes incluem a Metodologia de Línguas Estrangeiras e a Aquisição de Segunda Língua. Além de ter publicado artigos e editado vários livros, tem organizado painéis, mesas redondas e conferências sobre o ensino de português como língua estrangeira e Culturas Lusófonas. Tem também dado ações de formação a professores de português como língua estrangeira nos EUA, Portugal, Brasil e Canadá. Faz parte do Comité Editorial do Portuguese Language Journal, é diretor executivo do evento anual Encontro Mundial sobre o Ensino de Português (2012-2023), presidente da American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese (2014-2023) e presidente do NCOLCTL - National Council for Less Commonly Taught Languages (2020-2023).

Luis Gonçalves has a Ph.D. in Romance Languages ​​- Portuguese (2009), with a Minor in Communication Studies and certification in Cultural Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, and a Masters in Luso-Brazilian Literature (2000) from the same university. He also holds a B.A. in Communication Sciences (1995) from the University Fernando Pessoa, Portugal. He teaches in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at Princeton University (2010-present), he is the director of the Middlebury Portuguese School (2002-present) and his research focuses on Lusophone Cultures and Civilizations and their transatlantic dynamics. Other important research interests include Foreign Language Methodology and Second Language Acquisition. In addition to having published articles and edited several books, he has organized panels, roundtables and conferences on the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language and Lusophone Cultures. He has also provided training sessions to teachers of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in the United States, Portugal, Brazil and Canada. He is part of the Editorial Board of the Portuguese Language Journal, the executive director of the annual event International Conference on the Teaching Portuguese (2012-2023), president of the American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese (2014-2023)  and president of the NCOLCTL - National Council for Less Commonly Taught Languages (2020-2023).
