Teaching Philosophy

During my career, I have had the opportunity to teach several classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, Columbia University in the City of New York, and now at Princeton University, in New Jersey, and I have sincerely enjoyed each experience. I am committed to high quality instruction in the classroom, and my student evaluations indicate that I have consistently met this goal.

In my language classes I use a standards-based communicative approach. The material is used in class by the students, and is not presented or lectured. When the students come to class, all the activities build on the work students did at home. This is extremely empowering for the students because they realize that their success depends exclusively on their previous preparation and active participation in class. In my experience, most of my students do not have the opportunity to speak Portuguese outside the classroom. I prepare my classes in order to maximize the time that each student has to speak. I use a variety of activities to involve students in the material covered, giving them an active role in the process of learning. Discussion is a fundamental component of these classes because it helps the students to process information rather than simply receive it. Students can be more active in the learning process and make the material discussed more personal. I use technology to connect my students to Portuguese speakers around the world. For example, authors and musicians Skype in for interviews in class, after we read or hear their material. To promote communication, I encourage students to show up for my office hours, which are flexible, so students may stop by at their convenience. In summary, I strive to provide, first, an environment for learning where the students exercise whole concepts and become comfortable in using a foreign language; second, I give prompt feedback so that the students can clearly see what they are grasping and what requires more study on their part; and finally, I encourage students to engage with the Portuguese-speaking communities around the world to make learning Portuguese a significant and successful endeavor in their lives.
